We were required to complete the following practical tasks for our Foundation Production:
* Preliminary exercise: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.(COMPLETED EARLY ON IN THE COURSE TO GIVE US A TASTE OF TIHNGS TO COME...)
* Main task: The titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes. All video and audio material must be original, produced by the candidate(s), with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free source.
HOWEVER...before we could start anything,we had to RESEARCH a genre that we wanted to work in, and one way to do this was to look closely at the openings and content of THRILLER films.
Welooked at a range of film openings and decide what their common elements and main functions were.
Opening sequences –
* establish time, date and place
* set up enigma codes e.g. perhaps a Prophetic image/prop that doesn’t fully fit surroundings – to intrigue the audience and make them keep watching.
* titles/credits
* possibly establish conflict of interests/agenda between protagonist and antagonist
We have chosen to work in the meta-genre of Thriller. Some generic conventions of these types of films include the presence of significant rising tension, intricate plots and possibly red herrings (which are unexpected plot twists!!)

SOME SUB GENRES OF THRILLER (taken from wikipedia)
Psychological thriller: In which (until the often violent resolution) the conflict between the main characters is mental and emotional, rather than physical. The Alfred Hitchcock films Suspicion, Shadow of a Doubt, and Strangers on a Train and David Lynch's bizarre and influential Blue Velvet are notable examples of the type, as is The Sixth Sense by M. Night Shyamalan and The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith (who also wrote Strangers).
Horror thriller: In which conflict between the main characters are mental, emotional, and physical. Two recent examples of this include the Saw series of films and the Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. What sets the horror thriller apart is the main element of fear throughout the story. The main character(s) is not only up against a superior force, but they are or will soon become the victims themselves and directly feel the fear that comes by attracting the monster's attention. Other well-known examples are Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs
EXAMPLES OF WHAT OUR THRILLER IS LIKE…
In the tradition of…
MEMENTO and
FIGHT CLUB
Our Psychological Thriller will be called…
MANIPULATION
OR - THE MANIPULATOR because the characters are being toyed with by an outside force… or are they…?
Our title sequence is set slightly in the future, the ill fated Protagonist might have multi personality disorder/ be schizophrenic… We want to portray him as what our group perceives to be the dominant ruling social class in Britain, a wealthy, well educated, well turned out, conservative Caucasian male in his late 40’s . He is supposed to be working on a secret government project cataloging undesirable social groups in the UK and ways to get rid of them…
If we had more time and a budge, we could represent someone from and Arab/Muslim background being the servant character of the Protagonist and perhaps make a social comment about racism, inequality and the way terrorist attacks have encouraged England to clam up, be insular and to reject and be scared of other cultures that they see as being UN-British.
Can this be considered a contentious, contemporary/current issue to debate (fight about) for the audience…????
REPRESENTATION OF SOCIAL GROUPS…
Would this help us to get funding from someone? Especially if we consider issues of diversity and the representation of racial backgrounds in mainstream media?
Costume should be an expensive business suit and luxury items could be present in the impressive mise-en-scene – which would look good if it had with polished wood visible)
WHAT GROUP IS BEING TARGETED?
We have to work on this one and how it could be promoted via viral marketing… !!!!!!!!
